Why Some Sand Dunes Sing in the Desert
Sand dunes don’t seem like something that should make noise. But out in certain deserts, you can actually hear dunes humming, droning, or even booming loudly enough to compete with a train. While local stories often point to spirits, there’s a straightforward explanation rooted in physics. These so-called “singing sands” aren’t freak events. They happen whenever the right conditions line up.
This strange music doesn’t come from the wind blowing across the sand, or from animals making noise. The sound starts up when something, maybe a person, maybe a landslide, triggers a large mass of sand to rush down the steep, sheltered face of a huge dune. The grains slide and scrape against each other, producing a strong, low vibration. The song can echo for miles and has been known to rumble on for minutes at a time.
But not every dune has this talent. The magic is in the grains themselves. For a dune to sing, the grains need to be round, nearly identical in size, and coated with a thin film of silica. When these grains tumble together in a dense sheet, they start vibrating as one. The friction between them locks their movement together, turning what starts as a messy rustling sound into a steady, pulsing note. It isn’t just the air that vibrates either. The whole sliding layer of sand acts like a musical instrument, and the sound swells with the movement.
Each dune’s voice comes from its grain size. Finer sand makes a higher pitch, coarser sand gives a deeper boom. In Badain Jaran, China, massive dunes can roar at 105 decibels. Smaller dunes in Death Valley have a gentler song. Change the grains or let moisture in, and the dunes fall suddenly silent.
