Why Parrotfish Create White Sand Beaches With Their Teeth
If you’ve ever walked on a bright white tropical beach, there’s a good chance the sand under your feet passed through the mouth of a fish, specifically, a parrotfish. These colorful reef dwellers don't just eat algae. They actually chew up whole pieces of coral, breaking apart stone with a jaw so tough most power tools would be jealous.
The parrotfish’s “beak” is made of hundreds of interlocking teeth fused into a sharp edge, hard as copper. Just behind this cutting front, a row of grinding plate teeth acts like a mortar and pestle. When the fish bites into coral, it flexes strong jaws, pulverizing the rock until only the soft tissue and a fine dust of minerals are left.
The story doesn’t end there. Parrotfish swallow this coral powder and, after digestion, excrete it as soft, clean white sand. A single large parrotfish can create hundreds of pounds of new sand each year. In some atolls, most of the fresh sand each year is thanks to these fish.
Their teeth are a small marvel on their own. Composed of biomineralized tissue tougher than human bone, the parrotfish’s teeth constantly renew as they wear down. Out on the reef, these fish can grind rock for hours daily, turning old coral skeletons into the gentle sand beneath your feet.
So if you ever find yourself brushing tropical sand from your feet, keep in mind that an elaborate fish mouth has been quietly sculpting the beach long before humans arrived.
