Why Old Piano Keys Rarely Stick Anymore

The piano's escapement mechanism fixes the oldest problem in keyed instruments: how to let a hammer hit a string and then pull away fast so the string can vibrate on its own. When you press a key, the hammer naturally tries to follow, pressing against the string until you let go, which ruins the sound. Early keyboard instruments like the clavichord and harpsichord either plucked or struck their strings directly, so the sound faded quickly and the keys often stuck or jammed, especially in damp weather or during fast passages.

Today, under each piano key, you'll find a precise assembly of levers and pivots. The real breakthrough is the escapement lever. Pressing a key lifts a part called the wippen, which acts a bit like a seesaw and pushes the hammer upward using the jack. As the hammer gets close to the string, a tiny let-off button bumps the jack away at the right moment. The hammer is no longer being pushed; it coasts the last millimeter, taps the string, and bounces back. Good timing is essential here. If the jack releases too soon, the hammer never strikes the string. Too late, and you choke the sound or end up with sticky keys during quick playing.

At the same instant, a damper lifts off the string to keep the note clear. Once you release the key, the jack resets itself under the hammer, the damper settles back onto the string, and everything is ready for you to strike the next note, even hundreds of times a minute. Specialized springs and catches help the hammer if you play softly. When you press the sustaining pedal, only the dampers move, leaving the hammer system ready to go, untouched even during intense playing.

You’ll find escapement mechanisms in every grand piano and in many upright models. Over the past two centuries, builders have taken the original wooden machinery and replaced it with felt, steel, and modern composites. That progress lets pianists play billions of notes without the annoyance of sticky keys. The basic process remains: the hammer must fly free for proper sound and then quickly reset, all in the blink of an eye. This lets players manage fast, repeating runs or trills, whether they're in a humid old concert hall or a modern studio room.
