Why Human Blood Looks Red But Veins Look Blue
Take a close look at your wrist in good light. The veins beneath your skin can seem bluish, sometimes even turquoise, running in delicate threads just below the surface. Yet when you cut yourself, the blood you see is unmistakably red. This common illusion isn’t caused by the color of your blood, but by the way your body and the laws of physics create visual tricks for your eyes.
Blood in both veins and arteries is always red. Oxygen-rich blood in your arteries tends to be a bright, cherry red, while blood in your veins, on its way back to the lungs, is a darker maroon. Neither looks blue at all. The real explanation lies in how light behaves when it meets your skin. When sunlight or any white light shines on your arm, different wavelengths interact with your tissue in different ways, but not all make it through to the same depth.
Blue light scatters more easily in your skin than red light. This is similar to how the sky appears blue, atmospheric scattering sends blue wavelengths in all directions. Red wavelengths, being longer and less prone to scattering, reach deeper, and are more likely to be absorbed by your blood or pass through your arm entirely. Blue light, on the other hand, often reflects back toward your eyes before reaching the blood itself, particularly around veins where skin is a bit thicker and the vessels sit deeper.
So when you look at your veins, what you’re really seeing is less red (since much of it was absorbed or escaped) and more scattered blue reflecting back from the skin above them. This creates a blue-tinted look that your brain interprets as the veins’ color, even though it’s just an optical effect. If a vein were cut open, the blood would still appear some shade of red.
The bright blue shades used in medical illustrations of veins are more for clarity than accuracy. Your body isn’t changing pigments, the illusion comes from your eyes and the way light moves through skin. Sometimes, the things you see are shaped just as much by physics as by your own senses.
