The Trick Glassmakers Used to Make Flat Medieval Windows

Step into a European cathedral built during the Middle Ages, and the sunlight flickering through those uneven glass windows reveals a story of cleverness and heat. Creating any clear pane in 1400 was already impressive, but making one flat enough to serve as a window, long before modern float glass arrived, required both skill and nerve.

Glassmakers turned to a method known as crown glass. They began with a blob of molten glass, bright and viscous, blowing it into a rough sphere using a metal pipe. The next step was both risky and precise: after piercing the sphere at the far end, they reheated it and spun it rapidly. This spinning flared the hot glass into a broad, flat disk, often reaching almost five feet wide. Imagine spinning pizza dough, except the air is filled with heat at 1,200 degrees.

There's some unexpected physics at play here. As the disk spun out, the glass at the pipe’s center built up into a thick bulge, the "bullseye." To create the actual window panes, glassworkers cut sections away from this center. The next time you spot little round marks or a faint swirl in old glass, you’re seeing the record of this very technique: the evidence of spinning, caught and cooled in place.

Not every slice of the disk was equal. Glass near the bullseye stayed thicker and often hazier. The outer glass became thinner, clearer, and was prized by builders looking for more "transparent" windows in choir areas or for monks’ reading rooms. Sometimes the bullseye itself ended up in decorative panels or secondary spots. For centuries, the clarity of a window often came down to the hands of a glassmaker, and the way molten sand and spinning steel shaped the pane.

Today’s float glass, invented in the 1950s, uses molten tin to create perfectly even panes. Still, the old glass has a certain appeal. Each wavy, imperfect medieval window isn’t just an artifact. It’s a moment of physics, shaped by human breath and the dizzying spin of liquid glass.
