The Nerve Trick That Gives Squids Lightning-Fast Color Changes

A common cuttlefish can flick from ghostly pale to deep, shuddering black in a fraction of a second. Watch slow-motion footage and their skin seems to pulse and ripple, as if animated by an invisible force. The secret is a nervous system shortcut: the largest nerve fibers found in any animal, known as giant axons, run straight down their bodies.

For most animals, nerves are about as wide as a human hair, so electrical signals make their way at only moderate speeds. The Atlantic squid, chased by predators at every turn, needed more speed. Evolution responded by scaling up its axons, which can reach a diameter of up to one millimeter, visible to the naked eye and more than 100 times wider than a typical mammalian nerve. Because signals move faster through thicker "wires," these squid axons broadcast commands at remarkable speeds. They have even allowed researchers to insert tiny electrodes and discover basic rules of neurobiology. Much of what we know about how nerves work, including the firing of our own muscles, comes from early studies on squid.

But how does all this produce the skin’s dramatic show? Cuttlefish, squids, and octopuses control special cells called chromatophores, each containing a small sac of pigment. When a nerve signal arrives, muscles around the chromatophore contract and pull the sac open like an umbrella, spreading color across the skin. Relaxed muscles let the color withdraw to a single dot. By triggering these nerves in just the right sequences, the animal can create moving patterns, camouflage on the spot, or flash warnings with a burst of contrast.

The cuttlefish adds another layer: precision. Its nervous system connects individual chromatophores to detailed patterns, almost like pixels in a living display. Some species take this a step further and hold two patterns at once, zebra on one half, pebble-mottled on the other, so predators and prey see different animals, depending on their position. All this time, decision and action travel through those giant, silvery nerves in just moments.

For a squid, the line between thought and movement is measured in millimeters. Sometimes the quickest reaction in nature is simply a flash of fat, lightning-conducting wires under the skin.
