The Bouncing Bomb That Skipped Over Water

On the night of May 16, 1943, under moonlit skies over western Germany, RAF pilots from 617 Squadron gathered for a mission unlike any before. Their targets: the heavily fortified dams of the Ruhr Valley. These weren't just protected by anti-aircraft guns, underwater torpedo nets made most attacks pointless. But this time, the pilots carried a new weapon: the "bouncing bomb."

A year earlier, engineer Barnes Wallis had become fixated on the challenge. Could a bomb be designed to mimic a stone skipping across a pond, so it would leap over water and those torpedo nets, hitting a dam at just the right spot? Wallis, who had designed the R100 airship, built models and ran experiments on local reservoirs until he produced a functional design that resembled a steel barrel more than a bomb.

There was a delicate choreography to make it all work. The bombers had to fly just 60 feet above the water at 240 mph. Before release, each bomb was spun backwards at 500 rpm. This backspin helped steady its flight, allowed it to skip along the water’s surface, and made sure that after its final hop, it would cling to the dam wall, sink, and explode at the precise depth. Every detail had to line up for the weapon to function as intended.

The attacks, called Operation Chastise, breached two dams and unleashed flooding that halted war production in the Ruhr, at least for a while. The bomb was both an engineering feat and something of a riddle, showing how to overcome torpedo nets and heavy fortifications in one timed strike. Wallis’s unusual concept sparked years of new thinking in military engineering as others tried to understand the mechanics of projectiles and how they behave on water.

While weapons like the bouncing bomb faded quickly, the idea that spin, surface tension, and energy can twist the rules in your favor still turns up in physics labs and engineering projects. Wallis’s stone-skipping insight changed wartime strategy, and became one of the more unexpected success stories from the English countryside.
