How Sunflowers Know Exactly Where to Turn
At sunrise in the field, every sunflower points east, their tall heads fixed in near-perfect synchrony. As the sun arrives, they begin to move. By late afternoon, each flower faces west. When night falls, they turn back, ready for the next morning. Even seedlings, not yet in bloom and with lopsided leaves, pick up this rhythm early in their lives.
Following the sun might appear effortless, but the timing and unity of the movement is striking. What prompts these plants to move, and how do they gauge the exact hour to do so?
Inside each sunflower stem, cells on the cooler, shaded west side grow longer than those on the sunny east side. The hormone auxin collects away from light, causing the plant to bend towards the sun. This stretching pattern flips throughout the day, tracking the sun's path. Of course, the plant needs a signal for when to shift. Here, their internal circadian rhythm takes the lead, setting a daily routine that keeps the flowers moving even during long stretches of cloud or under artificial lights. Sunflowers start their nighttime turn eastward on schedule, without waiting for sunrise to tell them it's time to move.
Once the sunflower matures, its stem stiffens and the turning stops. The flower then stays facing east. This orientation has a purpose. At dawn, eastward-facing sunflowers warm up faster, drawing in more pollinators such as bees and hoverflies. Since they're warm early, these blooms get a head start before others in the field have fully caught up.
So every morning, from seedlings to towering blossoms, sunflower patches all over the plains move in quiet chorus, guided not just by daylight, but by hormones and the tick of their own internal clocks.
