How Ants Count Steps to Measure Distance From Home
Cataglyphis, a desert ant, can zigzag across blank expanses of sand for hundreds of meters while searching for food. Even in this shifting, empty environment, without scent trails or visual landmarks, it almost always returns to its nest. For a long time, biologists puzzled over how these ants manage this feat. The answer lies in the way they count their own steps, acting as a living odometer.
In the 1990s, researchers conducted an experiment using these ants by attaching tiny stilts to the legs of some and trimming the legs of others. This forced the ants to take longer or shorter steps than normal. The outcome made things clear: ants with stilts walked too far, sometimes well past their nest, while those with shortened legs ended their journey early. Control ants with unaltered legs navigated precisely back home. This showed that Cataglyphis ants count the number of steps taken from the nest, using stride length as a ruler, and then count the same number on the return trip.
Just keeping track of steps wouldn't be enough in a place where paths aren’t straight. Cataglyphis combines this step-counting with a sense of direction, adjusting as it turns and weaves around in the sand. Their brains perform a kind of built-in vector calculation, letting them estimate their position and then head back in a single, straight line, correcting for all the twists and turns. This method of navigation matches the efficiency of engineered systems, yet it runs on less than a cubic millimeter of nervous tissue.
The way these ants tally up their movements has inspired researchers who create algorithms for robots that need to find their way in unknown places. When an ant can return home accurately by just counting steps and calculating its direction, without leaving any cues behind, it shows that even simple creatures are capable of impressive feats.
