How Ancient Romans Built Arches Without Any Mortar
Stand beneath the 2,000-year-old Pont du Gard aqueduct in southern France. The sun catches the yellow stones curved high above, forming a triple stack over the Gardon River with no mortar at all. Those arches hold together by weight and precision alone, not by glue or cement. Geometry provides the secret.
Roman masons shaped blocks into trapezoids called voussoirs. At the top, a single wedge-shaped keystone locks the arch. When weight presses down, each stone shoves gently against the next, sending force down and outward through the curve. As long as the force flows through stone, the arch stays up. Glue isn’t necessary.
Getting an arch built was more tense than seeing it finished. Workers first assembled a full wooden frame, or centering, as a temporary brace for the stones. Each voussoir fit perfectly in its spot. The keystone, set last, made the whole thing suddenly firm. Only then could the wooden frame be hauled out and the stone arch stand alone, sturdy enough for troops, carts, and the water of a whole aqueduct.
Romans weren’t the only ones to use this method. Dry-stone bridges in Scotland rely on the same idea, and Maya temples in Yucatan do too. The system is efficient: if each block fits just right, the arch can stay up for thousands of years with almost no upkeep at all.
A Roman arch reveals something simple. You don’t beat gravity by opposing it, but by letting every stone lean on its neighbor, held up by weight and a geometric insight older even than concrete.
